It is kind of crazy to think that Sonic R is the only Sonic game for the Sega Saturn. While Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic Jam were also on the console. This would stand as 'THE' Sonic title for the system which when you look back all these years later is kind of crazy. This is a game that has a very mixed reaction to it and today I am sharing my thoughts.
What Is Eggman Up To?
Despite this being a racing game, you do have a story. Eggman is up to no good and once again after the Chaos Emeralds. This time around they are there as prizes to be won in grand Prix. So Sonic, along with Tails and Amy decide to enter to make sure that Eggman does not get his hands on the chaos emeralds. To be fair, Sonic R has a story that kind of makes sense and it was certainly more than Mario was offering at this time!
Sonic R was that pc game I always played at my grandmothers house. She had a Dell tower with Sonic 3&Knuckles and Sonic R. Of course I always played Sonic R. Its games like these that makes me miss the past, where dlc wasn't a thing or wireless connection. You had to go to your friend's house and sit with them and play games.
- Sonic R is the third Sonic racing game, and the first in 3D. Sonic R is a racing video game featuring single-player and multiplayer game modes. The player selects a character and participates in a footrace on one of five race tracks, competing for the fastest time ahead of the other racers.
- The evil scientist Dr. Robotnik) has snatched the poor animals of South Island and and turned them into robots. Only one hero can defeat Dr. Eggman and rescue the animals from his vile clutches – it's the super-cool hedgehog with the blue spiky hair, Sonic!
- Sonic R (U) ROM Download for Sega Saturn. Sonic R is a racing video game developed by Sonic Team and Travellers tale in 1997 for the Sega Saturn. It's the third instalment in the Sonic Hedgehog series and features all of the adorable characters from Sega's previous Sonic games. The player races as one of the ten Sonic characters in varied.
The presentation is not bad at all. In single-player, there is no pop-up and the game moves at a decent pace. It makes you wonder what a 3D Sonic game on the Sega Saturn could have been like. The soundtrack is something you will either like (which I do) or hate with a passion.
Super Sonic Racing
What we have here is an arcade-style racing game. I want to start with the good about this game. While it is true there is only a handful of tracks in this game. To be fair, these are some fantastically designed tracks and certainly make you feel like you are in the world of Sonic The Hedgehog. While there is only a small number of tracks, Sonic R is not as linear as other racing games. You can get to the finish line anyway that you want and there are many shortcuts and secret areas that you can go to do this.
What I like about this is that it makes racing the same track never feels exactly the same. You can get power-ups, coins, and other secret items that as well as helping you race will unlock characters. Speaking of characters, you have four at the start, but there are a further six that you can unlock which keeps you driving forward.
Not So Smooth Criminal
To be fair I feel that Sonic R does many things right. The controls in this game are what many people will call to when saying why they dislike the game and I kind of get that. This is a game that has some very strange controls. Taking corners feels very strange and it takes a while to get to grips with. The game has a kind of twitchy feel to the controls and some people will put the controller down and just say enough is enough and not want to proceed. Hey, I get it. However, if you stick with it and get the controls down, you can have fun with this game.
While the tracks are limited, I do like how there is a multiplayer option and some fun extra modes like the time attack and the mode where you collect balloons as well.
I can see why some people do not like Sonic R I really can. It does not exactly have a ton of content and those controls take a very long time to get the hang of. I though have had a soft spot for this game for a while and think that there is still some fun to be had here. It is worth checking out, even just as a curiosity so you can see what the only exclusive Sonic game on the Sega Saturn was like.

Description of Sonic R Windows
Released in 1997; Sonic R is the first Sonic game ever made to utilize 3D graphics for its gameplay, and the third Sonic racing title published by Sega. Right after Sonic 3D Blast was made, Sega turned again to Traveller's Tales to produce another technical marvel. The level design is amazing; rewarding exploration while reminding of previous Sega titles like NiGHTS: Into Dreams. The soundtrack is fantastic due to its CD-ROM quality; and the first Sonic title to feature vocal tracks in the music. It is one of the most graphically demanding titles for the Saturn; see how It compares to its PC counterpart.
There are 4 characters to choose from; including Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. There is a slew of characters to unlock including Dr. Robotnik 'Eggman', Metal Sonic and a creepy doll that looks like Tails. Each track is filled with alternate routes and collectibles, including the 7 iconic Emeralds that allow Sonic to transform into Super Sonic.
Sonic R has a lot of replay value, as you'll race the same track a dozen times trying to get all the collectibles. The PC version has aged well; and can be played in HD resolutions! Highly recommend to all Sonic fans.

if you open this, your screen literally crunches down to 640x480 resolution. just press the windows key, click settings, then click system, then scroll down until you see 'display resolution' just change it back to your normal resolution. also use sonic r updater lmao

Just a quick notice: If you download the RIP version, do not run unless you entirely know what you are doing. On Windows 10, it changes the display resolution, and on Windows XP it changes the colour mode to 8-Bit. BE CAREFUL

Sonic R may not have the best controls, but the games does have some great graphics and one of the best game soundtracks ever. Speaking of graphics, the player can choose one of two different texture styles: DirectDraw (Sega Saturn textures) and Direct3D.

For the people who are having problems with the controls,here is the problem,I heard the controls for the keyboard don't work on modren day PCs (windows 7, stuff like that) but there are some patches for it, but older PCs ( windows XP, windows 95/98, stuff like that) the controls are fine.
